5 Questions With Hammed 'Goodman' Okunade of Hingees
We met with Hammed, the bomb designer behind Hingees, last week when he stopped by our Ikoyi workspace to deliver some really gorgeous framed prints.
Hammed describes Hingees as a lifestyle and a community for people who love and embrace minimalism.
We've been following Hingees for a while and we're more than impressed with his approach to design so we couldn't resist the opportunity to chat with him and find out more:
Hello, Hammed! It's nice to finally meet you! Please tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Hammed ‘Goodman’ Okunade. My friends called me Goodman back in school, and it kind of stuck ever since.
I am a graphic designer and the founder of De Goodman Studios. My specialty is branding and editorial design. As is evident in most of my work, I love clean, minimalist design that conveys the message in a simple yet sophisticated way. I recently discovered a love for architectural photography, so I’m exploring that interest as well.
You’re clearly good at what you do. Did you always want to do design?
I originally started out doing coding and web development. However, I’ve always been intrigued by design, especially because it is the first thing you notice about anything. I spent a lot of time learning about what makes a design great – the internet proved to be a source of tremendous learning and inspiration.
Eventually, my love for visual design won and I ended up shifting my focus from coding and web development to design. I’ve been doing design for over a decade now.
Your minimalist, clean design is pretty much your trademark. What Inspires your approach to design?
As a designer, I live by the quote “Simplicity is the ultimate Sophistication”
I’ve found that clean, minimalist design is easier to remember. It is also quite effective at conveying the intended message. It sounds counterintuitive, but in the modern world, there are so many things vying for our attention that the simplest, clearest message ends up standing out.
I’m also a bit introverted by nature, and I detest disorder and noise, so I guess this also reflects in my work.
We love what you’re doing with Hingees! Tell us more about it and the inspiration behind the name.
One of the things I love about being a designer is the opportunity to help bring a brand to life.
Since my specialty is identity design for brands, I get that opportunity quite often, but mostly for other brands and businesses. Hingees for me Is an opportunity to create that same experience for myself, fusing two of my favorite things – Design + Minimalism.
The idea behind Hingees is creating a community of people who love and are inspired by simple yet beautiful things. It’s about fostering connections and positivity.
That is also where the idea behind the name ‘Hingees’ comes from. It’s a play on the word hinge. We all know that a hinge is something that connects and holds two things together.
The Hingees product line currently includes apparel, accessories, and print. Over time we hope to expand, based on the preferences of our community.
When you’re not creating kick-ass design how do you unwind?
When I’m not designing I’m either hanging out on the beach or roaming the streets with my camera.
Thank you for your time, Hammed. It was great talking to you!
