Each month, we sit down with a member of our community to talk about their work, their experience working out of CapitalSquare, and to just generally let the world know how awesome they are!
This month, our spotlight is Aniekan, oil & gas consultant at Daira Projects
Who: Aniekan Akpan
What he does: Oil and gas consulting
Working from CapitalSquare since: March 2017
Hi, Ani! Please tell us a bit about yourself and your background
I graduated with a Bsc Chemistry degree from the University of Calabar in 1999, came to Lagos for my NYSC where I worked at NAPIMS (a subsidiary of NNPC). It was such a fun role, working on Contracting and Commercial bidding procedures with no major responsibilities but then getting to have lunch in fancy restaurants around Lagos. After this experience, there was no way I was not going to work in the Oil and Gas industry! Bagged a Masters degree in Oil and Gas Economics, then joined ExxonMobil in 2006 where I worked across different roles in Gas Marketing for 11 years.
What’s your typical workday like? Tell us about what you do for Daira Projects
I get bored easily and so typically split my day into 3 parts in no particular order. One part is spent on researching new upstream Gas technologies and developing some ideas on improving current natural gas supply/transportation processes in Nigeria. The second part is focused on dealing with issues around our mineral exports – Suppliers, Buyers, Transporters etc. Finally, the third part of the day focuses on building relationships in the Oil and Gas sector.
What has been your biggest lesson as an entrepreneur? What would you do differently if you had to start over?
Patience!! I guess this is more of a function of Nigeria rather than just being an entrepreneur. Things may get tricky, you’ll feel like giving up but as long as you have got your business plan and know what you are doing, KEEP GOING!
What would I do differently?? I’d probably have done most of my company registrations, training and networking before taking the plunge. These things take time.
What productivity tips do you swear by?
Spend at least an hour everyday reading up on your field of interest and working on your craft. Trust me you’ll become a proper specialist in no time!
Career advice you’d give your younger self?
Look ahead to the future when starting your first job. Don’t just jump in because of a juicy salary. Rather do something you’ll love and that will allow you acquire the most skills possible.
If you could be someone else for a day, who would you choose to be and why?
Jay-Z! I get to have Beyonce sing to me whenever!! (alright, make sure my wife doesn’t see this part)
One fun fact about you 😊
I love playing pranks on people. It just gives me a massive buzz.
What do you do for fun? how do you unwind?
I love to play football and hang out with my friends.
You’ve worked from our Lekki space for nearly a year now. What are your thoughts about CapitalSquare?
I love it! It’s just perfect for me. Offers me a nice working environment, I get to meet some lovely people, it’s so flexible and works perfectly for an entrepreneur.
