Busy vs productive: Time management hacks for freelancers
We’re all familiar with the saying, ‘time is money’.
We value money because of all the thing we can do with it. But while you can always make more money, you can't increase the number of hours you have in any given day. What you can do though, is become more efficient in the use of your time, to get the most out of your day.
As a freelancer, your time management must be impeccable if you want to succeed. Unfortunately, this is one area where many people struggle.
How can you make sure you're using your time in the best possible way?
1. Create A schedule
Managing your time is a bit like managing your money. If you don’t have a budget, it’s easy to blow all your cash within a week of payday, then live on noodles for the rest of the month. Smart people know to plan for every important expense and budget towards it.
Same with time. If you don’t have a schedule, you’ll spend your time on twitter and Netflix, instead of the important stuff that brings in the money.
There are several systems for creating a schedule, so you’ll have to experiment a bit and find which works best for you.
2. Track your time
It is important to identify where your time goes, as well as how long each task takes you. You might find that you spend more time than you think you do on Instagram.
You might also find that you underestimate how long it takes to complete certain tasks.
Knowing where your time goes will help you plan and create an effective schedule.
3. Identify your peak energy periods
Perhaps you're at your best in the mornings. Or you're a night owl, who works best later in the day. Identify the time of day when you're at your best and schedule important stuff around that time.
It’s easier to do great work when you’re feeling energized.
4. Be ruthless about eliminating distraction
Wasted time is worse than wasted money, because you can't get your time back. If you're serious about being productive, you'll have to identify the things that distract you and shut them out while you work.
5. Choose your work environment with care.

6. Take care of yourself
Take breaks. Eat right. Stay hydrated. Get enough sleep. Exercise. Nurture your relationships and social life. Doing all this directly impacts your health and well-being. You can only give 100% when you're rested, healthy and happy.
